About British Soay Sheep – their care, breeding & fleece
BBQ lunch provided
In September, 2010 we held the first Midwest British Soay Breeder Gathering at Narnia Farm, Monroe, Wisconsin. People came from Oregon, Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin to this event. We had a really interesting day. It was so special to find how different people’s climates created different husbandry problems and in sharing all this I picked up some excellent ideas! Coming from Zimbabwe we’re used to deluges but the Mid West cope instead with intense cold and heavy snows. It was fun finding our passionate interest shared by others.
This year it is in Colorado an hour south of Denver airport and an hour east of Colorado Springs. Kathie Miller, a mine of information and Soay history who originally imported the Soay from Canada, will be there to answer questions.
Creating friendships enables us to exchange ideas as well as the stock to diversify our own flocks while ensuring a strong foundation of British Registered lines.
There are presently only 375 registered British Soay ewes in USA – all registered with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) in Stoneleigh, England. We need breeders networking and sharing information who will ensure a strong foundation of only British Registered lines into our flocks.
There will be an opportunity during the weekend to talk to a representative of the Colorado State Wild Life Department and observe wildlife.
Shaul's Manufacturing do exceptional work on sheep related necessities.
They have most generously offered to drive a minimum order of $1500 across for us to be ready
for pick up at the Gathering. Some items are heavy enough to make normal shipping costs currently prohibitive.
We would share a delivery cost of $700 between those collecting
equipment. Portable pen panels, gates, creep gates, hay feeders are especially well designed perfected
through years co-operating with Kathie Miller. Orders placed direct to Shaul's at www.sshaul@comcast.net
